If It Were You: Creating Supportive Healthcare Communities
A quiet place to hear from people who’ve been there, and help those who are where you've been.
If It Were You was created by people who have sat in waiting rooms not knowing what to expect, read terrifying test results, and faced impossible decisions. We built the space we once wished we had: calm, honest, and deeply human.
We all know that moment when you begin to realize something is wrong with your body or when time suddenly feels uncertain. In those moments, it is not always clear who to turn to. Healthcare providers can offer medical expertise, and family can stand by your side, yet many of us hesitate to burden the people closest to us or simply struggle to find the words for what we are feeling.
This project began from noticing the conversations that naturally unfold in unexpected places, in reception areas, in grocery store lines, or while waiting for appointments. Ordinary moments where people open up to strangers. In those exchanges, stories are shared freely, both heavy and hopeful. Often, those brief interactions carry a surprising weight. They remind us how much comfort can come from being heard and how empathy, offered quietly between strangers, can create real connection.
" I didn’t expect something so simple to feel so human. It gave me a moment to slow down and actually process what I was feeling. "
“It felt like passing a note to a stranger that just says, ‘I’ve been there too.’”
“It helped me process what I was going through, but it also made me realize how powerful it is to know your experience could help someone else feel less isolated.”
“It gave me a way to hold my own pain differently, not just as something I’m carrying, but something that could soften the weight for someone else.”
